Siphesihle Bulose's journey to spearheading road construction projects began with a spark of curiosity. When a seemingly mundane "Engineers Only" sign on a construction site caught his attention, he became fascinated by the world of engineering it represented. Fast forward seven years, and Bulose now finds himself as a rising star with the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL).

“I was on a construction site when I came across this board. I wanted to know what was happening in [the engineers’] office. And I knew that if I was going to find out, I would have to study further,” Bulose recalls.

Armed only with a national diploma at the time, he successfully applied for a SANRAL-sponsored bursary to study civil engineering in 2012. After graduating from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, he was absorbed into SANRAL’s Technical Excellence Academy, the much-lauded civil engineering graduate development programme.

Today, 35-year-old Bulose is one of SANRAL’s youngest project managers, overseeing the R1.2 billion rehabilitation and widening of the N2 from Mount Frere and eMaxesibeni (Mount Ayliff) in the Eastern Cape. The project will significantly improve safety and traffic flow.

“Here I am as a young guy who has been tasked with a R1.2 billion project. I am so grateful,” he notes proudly. Since taking on the role of project manager in 2022, he has overseen 15 projects in SANRAL’s Southern Region, which spans the Eastern Cape.

A thriving career is not just a personal achievement for Bulose; it also represents a means of supporting his family. Growing up in Umlazi, where economic opportunities were scarce, he experienced firsthand the challenges of limited resources and the importance of financial stability.

Bulose’s success story is a testament to how government investment in infrastructure, spearheaded by state-owned entities like SANRAL, creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond the roads themselves to uplift individuals, families and entire communities.
